Balance - Balance can be achieved by size and a perception of weight. The larger more layered or heavier the embellishment, the stronger the perception of weight. Make an embellishment the same size as the focal point in your photo (e.g a face) to balance the layout. If the photo were smaller the embellishment would dominate the page and vice versa. Balance can also be achieved by positioning different shapes and clusters of materials effectively, and by repeating groups of three.
Dominant Focal Points - Using a particular placed element as a dominant focal point can have a positive effect on the overall look and balance of you layout if you plan it effectively. Details and embellishments can also draw attention and cause an element to become a dominate focal point. Multi layering of papers and stitching can become a focal point when viewed up close, but when viewed from afar are not always strong enough to draw attention away from your photos.
